There was deep elation in abundant corners of America yesterday as Joe Biden announced that Sen. Kamala Harris is his choice for a running mate in the coming presidential election. In this nadir of our national suffering and reckoning, a burst of light broke through the unrelenting clouds that hang over us–from the unforgiving pandemic to the trembling clamor for racial justice.
I am throwing nostalgia away–it is a fragile dream at best.
But now, after hearing Sen. Harris boldly and ardently introduce her vision and commitment to this presently stricken nation, one realizes that yes—in spite of everything—our land is again discovering true patriots gleaming with prophetic light. Who among us who are hurting for our country did not wipe their eyes and feel their hearts fluttering with fresh hope this day?
(And again, we whisper our prayer for the soul of George Floyd. Here was the anonymous martyr of American streets who unknowingly created the Biden-Harris ticket for this maddening year, 2020.)
I am throwing nostalgia away–it is a fragile dream at best. I shall let the Kennedys and Dr King and the others sleep peacefully as they deserve. “Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans … and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed … ”
Today is now, decidedly for the future and we shall no longer limp to, or linger in, the past. JFK’s words have been realized now and we are marching with clear eyes to freedom. The world rejoices when a fruit begins to bloom. Each and every one of us must plant a seed so that the tree yields us a harvest of hope.
God bless America!
